Acer eMachines E510 – The beauty and the beast
by Gary IllyesIn the past few days I was able to test an eMachines E510 notebook, fabricated by Acer.
The notebook’s design is quite nice, the case is black and the LCD is high quality, bright and my only issue with it was the reflections. It’s like a mirror, you can see yourself in it. Quite annoying.
The processor of the notebook is a an Intel Celeron with a FSB working at 533 MHz, the clock speed is 2.13 GHz and 1 Meg of cache. The notebook is shipped with 2 gigs of memory so in combination with the processor, this computer is an extremely good choice for, even advanced and graphics, animations heavy office work.
For the sake of why not, I decided to try to view a HD video (720p). For my shock, it was played smoothly. As the E510 has an additional VGA port to send the video output to an external device, for example a HD Ready TV-set with VGA input port, the eM-E510 is excellent for viewing high definition clips and movies directly on your television.
Usually notebooks are not recommended for playing games. This rule applies on the eMachines E510 too. Even though the processor speed and the amount of RAM is high enough for playing mid-range games like the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, when i tried playing it, the performance was poor. This is the result of the low-end video-card integrated in the system, an Intel GMA X3100 with shared memory (up to 358MB).
The notebook comes with preinstalled, bootable Linux. Changing the OS can give some headaches for the beginner user. By default, the SATA mode is set to AHCI, Advanced Host Controller Interface. If you let it as is, setting up *any* type of Windows will fail.
My first test was to install Windows XP Professional, but while setup, the installer couldn’t find the installed HDD, a Hitachi 160 Gig (5200 rpm). This could be solved only by setting the SATA mode to IDE, when the installer ran without any issue. The next issue appeared when, after the first boot Windows informed me about some missing drivers: for the Broadcom LAN card, the video card and the High Definition Audio sound card. I thought not a problem, since I got with the notebook a DVD containing additional software and drivers. I was wrong: the DVD contained drivers ONLY for Vista, so my only option was to download the drivers from the internet, but since the LAN card wasn’t working, the option wasn’t plausible.
To install Windows XP on an eMachines E510, you have to switch the SATA Mode from AHCI to IDE from within the BIOS, else the installation will fail. To use AHCI with Windows XP, first you have to install XP in IDE mode, install the AHCI drivers, THEN switch the AHCI on in the BIOS.
Update: there’s a workaround posted in the comments section of this page, please scroll down to see it.
The next test was installing Windows Vista Ultimate. As the installer is much more advanced than the XP’s, i thought there will be no issue. Again, I was wrong: the computer halted when Vista tried to configure its software. The solution was again to switch the AHCI off, then the installation didn’t fail. But just for the sake of the fun, if you switch later AHCI on, Vista will not boot. At all. The only fix was coming from Microsoft’s Knowledge Base. If you read it, the whole thing is very logical and dumb in the same time.
The Li Ion batteries resisted 1 hour and 57 minutes when the notebook was used for typing this article and 54 minutes when I was viewing a HD video. I’d rate this performance as excellent for its class.
The WLAN device was working properly in any condition. It was able to connect to a desktop computer from almost 100 meters, but at this distance the drop of the transfer was considerable.
The price of the Acer eMachines E510 is $500 + VAT where I live. Generally, the performance was very good for office work and even for HD media display. In comparison with its price, I would say that it’s an awesome choice for business-men or bloggers who travel a lot. I’d recommend it for almost anyone.
Important Update: One of the comment authors, M!llu was kind enough to provide the XP drivers for the eMachines e510 notebook on an alternative download site, accessible for anyone, thanks to Rapidshare. You can find the download-links by clicking here. I checked all the files and couldn’t find any threat in them, not even false positive.
Update: If you’re sick of searching for XP drivers for the eMachines e510, the official support website of eMachines provided them here: http://support.emachines.com/em/driver/nb/e510.html. If you click the link, you will find both Vista and XP drivers, and additionally the users’ manual for the eMachines e510.

By the way, at the time of the post I couldn’t find *any* driver for the notebook, not for Vista, nor for XP or other OSes. The website, http://www.emachines.com is dead for good, Acer has no information about the eMachines laptops on its official website, Google listed only people searching for software.
I guess the only solution is the drivers CD/DVD provided with the notebook.
methode on Sun, 3rd Aug 2008 2:47 pm
I think I found a workaround to get some XP drivers: the eM E510 is very similar to an Acer notebook, the Extensa 5220, and some of the E5220 drivers are compatible with the eMachines E510.
I downloaded the necessary drivers from here: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/ex_5220.html , installed them and everything was cool, no issues or conflicts.
Hope this helps

My daughter have a same laptop, and I can’t set the size of vga card in BIOS… (is very sily with 8mb vga)
methode on Fri, 15th Aug 2008 6:16 pm
Hi kalasnykov,
As far as I know the Intel 965 Express Chipset can not be altered from the BIOS, I saw is listed that it’s using 8MB of system memory (shared). However, when I had Vista Ultimate installed, the OS allocated 32 MByte of memory for the VGA. Under XP and Windows 2003 it was defaulted 8MB though.
The fact that Vista can do the above is the result of its innovative architecture. Even if the gadgets and all the other stuffs are broken, the architecture is well done
I’m writing this comment from the eMachine e510 notebook, still using it and my only issue with it is that sometimes th touch-pad is not responding. To fix it, I have to switch it off then back on again. Kinda weird

Hi,
I just have buy this computer.
I’ve formated my system and i’ve installed win xp pro instead of vista. I have also installed some drivers (intel gl960 and graphics x3100) but, in the system proprietes i still have some problems with peripherical : ethernet and pci. The problem is that i can’t have any access to internet and no sound. I suppose that i’ll have to install the drivers from the Acer’s website, the one you gave the adress upper. But i’m not sure about which driver : Lan Broadcom and audio realtek? Thank you very much for your help.
methode on Sat, 23rd Aug 2008 7:13 pm
Yes, those are the ones you’d need.
It’s kinda odd that we have to download the drivers from the internet but without internet connection (if LAN).

Hi M!llu,
I don’t really think it would be a very good idea to publish on a 3rd party website the drivers as it’s prohibited by eMachines (see manual of the notebook).
If you really want to do it, I advice to post it on a file deposit service like RapidShare then provide the link to the file either here or on your own website (if you have of course)
Thanks for the comment

FIRST OF ALL WHEN YOU WANT TO INSTALL XP ON THIS MACHINE YOU MUST ENTER IN THE LAPTOP’S BIOS AND SWITCH THE HDD INTERFACE FROM AHCI TO SATA THEN YOU CAN INSTALL XP.
AFTER YOU INSTALL XP HERE ARE THE DRIVERS I USED:

There’s a very easy way to enable AHCI after installing XP under IDE mode:
http://expertester.wordpress.com/2008/07/27/how-to-enable-ahci-windows-xp/
I tried other methods with no positive results. This one worked fine.

Here is another tutorial :
http://www.theacerguy.com/2008/06/16/how-to-install-the-ahci-drivers-after-installing-xp-in-ide-mode/
I have a question,
my CPU fan is ON every 30 seconds for only about 10 seconds then it turns OFF and get ON again.I dont get it. If it is overheating problem why is not ON for about a minute to cool the cpu down. This way its continuously ON and OFF.Its really annoying.
Anybody else have the same problem ?
Logi on Tue, 16th Sep 2008 3:46 pm
I forgot to add the computer is Acer eMachines E510.
methode on Tue, 16th Sep 2008 3:53 pm
Yeah, the one i’ve tested was doing the same thing. When we measured the CPU temperature it was in its normal limits though, so I guessed it turns on and off to keep the cpu below 40 degrees Celsius. But it was very quiet, thus it wasn’t annoying at all.
Yours is noisy? If so, you could try to get back to the firm you bought from and ask them to replace it. Noisy notebook is not good at all.
Logi on Tue, 16th Sep 2008 4:38 pm
No it’s not to noisy at all.But the thing that’s bother me is the continuously ON and OFF.It’s my first notebook and I guess is just one of those thing I need to get used to.
Thanks for reply.

please help me,how to format hd on eMachine?
methode on Thu, 18th Sep 2008 4:20 pm
Well, that’s not hard at all. You want to switch from one OS to other I guess, and all you need is a clean hard, right?
If that’s the case, just get XP or Vista bootable CD/DVD and start to install. You will be asked which partition you want to install on, and, if you want to quick or full format that drive.
In the first place you have to switch AHCI off from the BIOS else none of the installers will work, XP will not find the HDD, Vista on the other hand will halt at a specific point.
Let me know if you need more help.

How hot does the e510 get after let’s say 5-6 hours of use? I’m considering buying this model so I’m interested in it’s durability (low funds here)
Do the drivers posted by M!llu really work perfectly for XP?
Thank you for your time and assistance!
methode on Sat, 20th Sep 2008 10:28 am
I bought this notebook for myself too, and currently I’m using it plugged in for about 7-8 hours now and it didn’t get “hot” at all. Measured, the hottest spot on it is 37.3 degrees Celsius, the room temperature is 24 degrees, so the notebook’s temperature is very good.
I’m extremely satisfied with this notebook, really. Considering its price is an awesome thing. Not as good as the EliteBook I recently played with (http://devoracles.com/warning-the-hp-elitebook-6930-may-resist-more-than-you-can/188) , but it’s worth every penny.
As for the drivers. Well. I tested it and each was OK. If don’t trust those drivers, you can find some here: http://uk.emachines.com/uk/support/eME510.html
Hope I helped

M!llu on Sun, 21st Sep 2008 5:01 pm
for Phelipe
When you turn on your e510 you should see an white “e” on the black screen and in the bottom right corner what keys you should press to enter BIOS or change boot settings. pay a little attention and you should succeed. but if pressing f2 to enter the BIOS doesn’t work contact the vendor.
Go ahead and install those video drivers and you shall enjoy 384 Mb of video memory. I have installed those drivers and I have no problem since.
Phelipe on Sun, 21st Sep 2008 6:06 pm
thank u M!llu, i go tonight to install drivers, im not home now… y, i press F2 and nothing happend
i must contact vendor as u say… tnx a lot!
methode on Sun, 21st Sep 2008 6:51 pm
Hey Phelipe,
Sorry for the late answer… life… you know
So, before contacting the vendor as M!llu suggested, try something: You CAN enter the BIOS pressing F2, the problem is that the period of time while you can press that dam button is too short sometimes. So, the solution is, You do see that huge “E”, right? That’s the boot screen, after that disappeared pres Ctrl+Alt+Del, XP or Vista started to load that time but fear nothing, the OS will not be demaged. The result will be, as the CMOS has to reload itself completely, you will see the E screen for a longer time, and in the lower right corner the instructions to enter the BIOS UI.
Try it please
methode on Sun, 21st Sep 2008 6:58 pm
Howdy bas.boe,
How many Watts? Uhh, that’s a hard question, I have to admit. The battery charger’s max output is 65 Watts, I hope that’s what you asked.
If you want, I give you the ID of the charger then you can look it up on Google: LiteOn N18152 which is a standard Acer charger.
Emachines e510 comes with 2 Gigs of RAM, that’s around 2048 Megabytes of RAM. The video RAM is shared, the minimum is 8Megs.
I hope I helped, if not, feel free to ask

Coz i heard something that only software rendering works (fro now) , no am not extreme gamer but yea i need to have some games played
methode on Fri, 26th Sep 2008 6:45 pm
Hi makiztar,
I said in the review that i don’t recommend it for gaming purposes, but on my end, using Windows Vista at the moment, hardware acceleration is working fine. Regarding the Intel X3100’s hardware transform and lighting (T&L), yes, it’s supported. The Intel X3100 also supports OpenGL 2.0, DX10 and SM4.
Someone said on a forum that EVE Online you can’t play with it, though. Not sure why, but the issue was traced back to the video card.
Hope this helps.

hi again makiztar,
Yeah, I saw you’re from Serbia
The notebooks I test are cheap, both are below 500 euros in my country (EU country). I’m just writing the reviews for a Benq and a Toshiba notebook, not sure if Benq is available in your country though, because a Benq representative stated that they have export embargo on some former Yugoslav countries… pity from their side.
Check the reviews out when they will appear online, you might like them.
Regarding the games, I have to admit that I’m not a gamer, I guess i could count on one hand the games I played. I test with The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion because it’s a resource eater as far as I know and the benchmarking tools’ results can be very incorrect as some manufacturers write their firmware in a way to perform well on some benchmarking tools. If Oblivion is playable, I guess WOW is also playable. In eMachines’ case it was quite a bad idea to load that game as it didn’t look good at all and the gaming performance was also quite poor. OK, a bit better than poor, but I still wouldn’t play on it Oblivion.
You should check the games’ requirements I guess. Anyway, the Intel Mobile video cards were not made for gaming, I can’t say this enough.
I use it for work (server management) and for development and for this purpose is excellent.
Dreamweaver CS3 works excellently, the software I use for server management, including the IPMI software, FTP and SSH/Remote Desktop performs very well. Better than I thought.
Let me know if you need help or advice, I’d be glad to help.

Well thanks for the info .. I never wanted to see Oblivion not to play it
Well the purpose of Lap Top will be :
Am goin to work in another country so,ill need Net at 1st place ,then music, movies(multimedia ofc) and last would be some little gaming like playin WoW,WcIII thats all , well ill check game req for other few games but for WoW is :
* Intel Pentium® III 800 MHz or AMD Athlon 800 MHz
* 512 MB or more of RAM
* 32 MB 3D graphics card with Hardware Transform and Lighting, such as NVIDIA® GeForce™ 2 class card or above
* DirectX® 9.0c (included) and latest video drivers
* 6.0 GB available HD space
* 4x CD-ROM drive
* A 56k or better Internet connection
Sry for this big post

That’s my idiocy… I have to know everything which happens on my server, who passes by, who clicks where, what pages did you view, etc. Sorry. But check the http://devoracles.com/privacy-policy, everything remains on the server, no worries
Now there are performance reports too on Youtube? Next time I will see my cat sleeping on the neighbor’s dog…
The Benq is a JoyBook A52, I’m quite pleased with it, I’m writing this from that notebook. My only disappointment is the short battery life… that’s quite low. This one is 490 euro where I live.
, anyway, its price where i live is ~475 euros.
And the other is a Toshiba Satellite L300, I’m inclined to not recommend this one for anybody, but my foes
If the prices are higher in Serbia, you could check the prices in Hungary or Romania, depending on in which side of Serbia you live. I heard both have cheap shops. Or, I usually buy from an online store and pay for the courier only when the item arrived to me, that way I’m protected, can’t loose money and the online stores are way cheaper than the retail shops in the streets.
The req’s are OK for most of the modern notebooks. I guess it should work.
BTW, you won’t convince me to install WOW on the emachines notebook

He,he .. Next time ill watch what am doin here ..
)
http://devoracles.com/privacy-policy Cool ?
Well u should check uTube sometime ? muxaxaxa
I was postin on some Serbian forums about x3100 and some guy was postin uTube links so i was about to check and u should too, atleast u can try .. xD
The Benq model i didnt see anywhere but Toshiba .. U can find it almost anywhere, well the model L300 with Celeron M cpu’s etc is about 440-460e here but models with dual core ones are 530e+..The info is right coz am checkin on most viewed official site with all stores info in Serbia tho .. http://www.itsvet.com If is this commercial u r free to delete the link i posted
Well one model of L300 i can afford but only difference between its and eMashine is 200gb hdd Gfx r same so am stayin’ on eMashine choise ??
Install it plox? Cmon its so universal and almost all types or person’s plays it ? Ok me again with jokin .. But i know that u r installing it
Ok lets finish this .. My lastest questions are :
X3100 gfx rendering quality depends on drv version ? Which one r oke ? Well with HW rendering enabled ill be pleased ?
I like Aspire 5315 rly coz its Bmw design etc , eMashine got some casual design in all black colour and only differences here is that 5315 got Celeron on 1.73 512mb and 80gb hdd,eMashines Celeron 2.13ghz,1gb ddr2,120gb ..
Lastest question :
Design or Hardware inside ? :S Strange question i know ..

WoW works fine on the JoyBook.

And here is the toshiba’s review: http://devoracles.com/toshiba-satellite-l300-only-if-you-can-ignore-the-headaches/294
Read it, but please do not think about to buy one.
First, on the eMachine e510 WoW works fine
.
Secondly, why don’t you tell me which notebooks do you think you’d like to buy, and i do my best to test them. This applies to anyone. I have access to almost all the notebooks and would happily test them for you.
Drivers are the second heart of a hardware, so you should always have the latest drivers installed. As a general rule, if the driver is up to date, the performance of the hardware will be better.
When you want to buy a PC, i recommend you to look for the hardware first and only then to the item’s design. A notebook can look awesome, but it can have lower performance than a dead snail.
Let me know if you have more questions
makiztar on Sun, 28th Sep 2008 3:16 pm
Well i have some rly bad feeling about that review .. Or its very bad(i mean not review but nootbook in the review ^.^) ?And another voice in my head said to me Not o Buy it
So i will not .. Well gd job on ur side u tested..
And on those last two Benq and Tosihiba u tested WoW nice to see it
And it works fine with WoW so its cool then ..
Well then eMashine will be(Well u tested WoW on it ^^) .. 5315 got rly nice design, lot better then eMashine.. but 512mb of memory , 80gb hdd(i can go over it),cpu well its 200-300 mhz only No ?
Well hardware on eMashine is way to better ..
Thanks and i appreciate all info u provided ..
Thanks

Hi edifice28,
If you live in Romania, you could try http://emachines.ro/ro/home.html
That should work for you.
Also, I won’t allow directory listing on the server nor will I put every driver in one single ZIP, because the first is a security risk, the second would saturate the bandwidth in no time, sorry.
Let me know which drivers you need and I post the link to it, but if you visit the above eMachines link, you should be able to download everything you need.
Let me know if you need further help.

Hello ,
am back again with this part of one your topics u said: “I have access to almost all the notebooks and would happily test them for you.”
Here, this is kinda off topic but is there any chances for u to test an FSC v5535 Core2Duo,2gb mem,160gb hdd,15″ etc ..
Or mybe just an opinion about that model would be great..
Thanks
p.s. Yea , some other options came,i mean some other choices for notebook..

Hi again,
I phoned the firm and the Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo will arrive to me later today.
Probably will take about one day to test it fully, you know, batteries, OS switching, drivers, etc. so most likely the review will be online the day after tomorrow, that makes, Thursday (?)… well, what day is today? Tuesday?
But that Esprimo if i’m not mistaken is around 500-550 euros. Isn’t that much a bit? For that money I guess you can find a Dell Inspiron or even an HP. I guess.
Anyway, The review of the Esprimo will be available the day after tomorrow, whatever day is today.
makiztar on Wed, 1st Oct 2008 8:36 am
Well am not in hurry i have a time till 6. Okt..

Dunno am so confused atm ..
Thursday would be fine.
Ya the price is about 550 but am good at talk and i the actuall price for me would be about 450-500e(35,000rsd),42,000 is the real price
I was thinkin about Msi EX610 too
Lot of FSC Models are with SiS chipset so the Cpu is Core2Duo i guess the chipset will be one of Intel 960/965 express series no ?
Coz i have some rly bad opinion with SiS Chipset and i would like Intel ones i have a choise no ? I mean i can ask for Intel chipset..
X3100 is integrated and i dunno is HW(T&L) supported by SiS Chipset’s..
Thanks

Hmh .. Well for now Fsc Esprimo 5535 Review would be great , well the Msi EX610 i didnt mention it to them but i think its in the same price range ..?500-550e? Or even much ? :S
I checked Fsc models and almost all of em are SiS M672 based .. I think i MUST talk to them about INTEL ones ..
And yeah SiS is bad chipset and if they want to give me that ill say em few things coz i know what i need or ill try to ask for Intel Chipset i guess ..
Thanks again

Ya you right those s3 mirage video cards are bad but Intel x3100 is integrated but id like it on Intel chipset not on SiS one , any opinion?

My bad, MSI EX610 i can’t access. MSI EX710, 600, 601 only these. the cheapest is the 601, that is ~500 euros. the rest is much more.
If I were you, i’d choose only intel chipset. I trust intel because… dunno why, i just trust them. If you can, I’d recommend you to get Intel Chipset.
I’m writing this from the Fujitsu notebook. I’m quite satisfied with it so far.
makiztar on Wed, 1st Oct 2008 8:54 pm
Ex600 ?

Hmh the thing is EX610 is default Turion 64 x2 based, and Ex600 is Intel Centrino based but theres versions with C2D ..
I have a feeling that 7xx series is lot of money,be concentrated on MY BUDGET! he,he.. Again me with my jokes
Yea agreed INTEL chipset only
U trust Intel coz u hear about it in every move, anywhere SiS is another story , story for self ,, Dunno why Fujitsu even work with em ? Or Sis is theyr i dunno ..
He,he .. Fsc,hows typing feeling tho ?
And what version u get Intel or SiS based chipset ? Graphics ? Ahhh again me with my borednest ill w8 for review xD
Cheers and thank you,i really admire you

I won’t tell you now. Tomorrow at this time you will know. Well. it’s 11 PM at you? or 12AM :S, whatever, it will be online.
The 7xx is expensive.
Typing on the Fujitsu Esprimo is better than on the emachines. it’s somehow softer. The position of the buttons is the standard one so switching from emachines to this is no issue.
BTW, an MSI with integrated number-pad is cool.
You admire me? Well, I live on coffee, sleep about 6 hours a day, smoke 2 packs of cigs and see only IT equipments all day long. Still admiring me?
Think again

Ok,strange thing is .. U remember http://www.itsvet.com?All stores in Serbia sticked together..hm? All of 5535 FSC Esprimo was with Sis m672/m968 or chipset didnt mentioned at all , theres no word of Intel chipset on that model of Fsc , all video integrated was OMG SiS Mirage .. What To Do ? U heard something about that model havin Intel chipset and x3100 video actually ? Guy in store told me but over a phone
And that store doesnt have WebSite.. Pff
I wont let that seller to give me stupid SiS chipset,ok maybe is GOOD chipset am checkin it atm but video cmon .. its SO SO BAD .. Agreed ?
Notebooks -.-
methode on Thu, 2nd Oct 2008 1:18 pm
Well, we can’t say it’s really bad. If they still producing it and people buying it, it shouldn’t be that bad. I guess
The thing is, I have only bad memories with that chipset, that’s all.
You’ll see in the review what chipset it has
methode on Thu, 2nd Oct 2008 7:21 pm
OK gals and girls, heres the review for the Esprimo: http://devoracles.com/the-fujitsu-siemens-esprimo-v5535-tests-and-review/312
If the batteries would last more, I’d sell my eMachines just right now on eBay and would go for that Esprimo, whether it has Intel GFX chipset or not.
Man, That notebook rocks plugged in! It’s a piece of art! (If I don’t consider the HP Elitebook which is still my favorite).
The SiS chipset rocked the hell out of Oblivion (WoW also, but that’s easy to understand why since you provided the requirements)
If you have the $1000 for this notebook and you wouldn’t use it too much on batteries, I’d buy it, that’s sure.
And… If you’re not satisfied with the SiS chipset, you can put in it an Intel M or anything else.

Hi again makiztar,
That MSI… I can’t test it, I mean, I’d like to but the firm I get the notebooks from doesn’t have it on stock
Well, The CPU is a Sempron… You’d give up an Intel CPU for an AMD, think again. I was fighting with an AMD desktop PC for about a year or so then sold it on eBay… I really hate AMD processors… they are hot, slow, and why the hell do they say 3600+ when it’s 2000? bah, i just hate the AMD processors.
Card reader, well, if you have cards, it’s useful. 1gig of RAM, if you install Vista, the Aero stuff will kill the notebook.
Thanks for the compliment. It was cool to write it, too. I love that notebook.
If your only choice remained the emachines, well, I use it daily almost 8 hours and I’m very satisfied with it. So I guess you will be too.

Hi makiztar. I didn’t check other sites to learn how’s it. I told you my own experience, particulary that I’m extremely satisfied with it. I use it every day, all day long and performs much better than a laptop which costs $400 more. For me this is enough to be satisfied.

Hi M!llu,
Well, I have Vista Ultimate from Microsoft. I was in the first private beta tester team and I used it a lot, thus got used with it.
The first thing I like is how it manages the batteries on notebooks. They last about 30% more under Vista than on XP. I’m on road a lot and 30% means much for me.
Second thing is how it manages the drivers of the hardware from within the PC. I get notifications when new drivers are released from the Update service, thus I don’t have to always keep an eye on the driver releases. It saves me a lot of headaches, I encountered many times buffer overflow issues in drivers, I don’t want again, and Vista helps me in this.
And finally, I’m Aero addicted
I find it awesome
Anyway, these are not enough to switch if you really like XP. I say wait for Windows 7, that will be rock solid and the switch will be very easy and issue less.
Want somebody learn about Windows 7? I’d write a review about it, had 2 hours with it and some nice experiences

Heya makiztar,
By default the Intel GMA will use 128MB of memory if you have 2 gigs of RAM. The OS will assign more automatically if it has from where.
BUT. I found that if you go to Control Panel>>INTEL GMA Driver for mobile >> 3d settings >> Memory footprint set to high, windows will use max memory. So, currently I have 128 System Video Memory and Shared Systme Video 230MB, that makes 328 wich is the maximum.
Hope it helps
makitzar on Sat, 11th Oct 2008 7:08 pm
hmh..i was checking “information” still i use only 8mb with footprint set to high..i have version with 1gb of ram so for me default would be 64mb no ? But its not ..
any clue ? I checked syste memory “right click/properties/its still o,99gb” gah!
btw am using Xp mybe its coz that? And ya one more thing..I got Vista Ultimate with notebook, but decided to install Xp without formating hdd i dont have Vista in “boot” options .. hm ?
methode on Sat, 11th Oct 2008 7:33 pm
Kinda weird.
If you can wait until tomorrow, I will install again XP and will also try to create a dual-boot environment. Till then I can’t make a statement.
If I’m not mistaken, XP is dumb enough to not let you manage the memory of the video card even if shared.
Did you check in DXDIAG the video card? What does it say?
methode on Sat, 11th Oct 2008 7:37 pm
BTW, for dual boot you do know that you have to have an additional line in the boot.ini , right?
For example this is my Boot.ini on the home network server:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”Windows Server 2003, Enterprise” /noexecute=optout /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS_VISTA=”Windows Vista, Ultimate” /noexecute=optout /fastdetect
The above makes windows to let you decide what to boot. This if XP didn’t f*ck up the configuration of Vista and you placed XP in a folder separate from Vista.
makitzar on Sat, 11th Oct 2008 8:03 pm
Hmh.. am not in hurry i can wait , lol i was about to ask u for Windows Vista boot config
Thanks for that, ill try to edit boot.ini ASAP..
Yea i did run DxDiag but dunno what part of diag u need ?Only thing that it strange to me is “asking me for whql signatures”,directX files r ok , “agp texture acceleration :not available” hm .. still this is IGP so doesnt mather no ?
tnx for boot files , well i said with “no formating” i installed Xp but in same folder ..
Vista was c/windows,i installed xp in c/windows1 .. sick huh?
methode on Sat, 11th Oct 2008 8:31 pm
that should be OK. I mean for windows.
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1) means for windows local hard disk on primary IDE working as master, and its first partition. so that’s basically “C:” if you didn’t change the mappings. So when I said:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”Windows Server 2003, Enterprise” /noexecute=optout /fastdetect
That’s basically:
C:\WINDOWS=”Windows Server 2003, Enterprise” /noexecute=optout /fastdetect
That makes windows to search for its files in the C:\WINDOWS directory, the text after the directory/path is what you will see in the boot screen. The rest is irrelevant.
I think I will call eMachines tomorrow. I’m testing another notebook at the moment and can’t increase the memory manually no matter what.
BUT… somehow, when I start AutoCAD it does increase the memory to 256Megs. When I close the application, back to normal. Very weird.
In DXDIAG, switch to the display tab, then the first fieldset labeled Device is what is interesting, look for “DAC type” and “Approx Total Memory” .
AGP should be on if you have an AGP card or the card is routed/integrated through AGP. Turn it on from bios and see what happens.
makitzar on Sat, 11th Oct 2008 8:43 pm
Well i changed it to : multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”Windows Vista, Ultimate” /noexecute=optout /fastdetect
coz Vista is “Windows” and i named Xp Windows1 , but still doesnt work .. dunno ill figure something out unless u have free time to scr shoot me ur c: with “enabled hidden files” mybe is some system file missing due to Xp installation .. ya i know how boot works ill try something more ..
Well thats the point id like to change shared memory manually that would be JUST great

)
dac type:internal
Approx memory is : 384mb
Well i checked Bios thats the problem it says :
System memory 640kb
Phisical:1024(1gb)
video memory : 8mb
blaahhh
Any clue enabling this ? Enabling some better options in Bios or something .. 8mb is actually OMG u know ?
It remembers me in period when i had Matrox g200 agp card lol
methode on Sat, 11th Oct 2008 8:57 pm
You *ARE* using max memory makitzar! The thing is, that no matter what 8 mb is default, that’s what is integrated on the plaque to use. Then if available, it will allocate more from RAM as I said. You did have enough thus allocated from RAM.
Bios. Well, under BIOS no driver is loaded so it can’t manage its memory allocation, only under windows when drivers are loaded.
So, currently you are using 8MB VRAM + 376 MB additional taken from system memory (RAM)
What’s the color depth? 32bit?
Try to run the DXDIAG tests, too. If not enough memory the last d3d test should fail.
We could do a bios update to get some new nifty features but last time I did a bios update the PC arrived in the garbage. My notebook is too young to die. Maybe in 3-4 months I will do an update, but not yet.
In boot.ini you should have something similar to this:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS1=”Windows XP” /noexecute=optout /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”Windows Vista, Ultimate” /noexecute=optout /fastdetect
“screen shoot c” is a nono. It’s a LAN server and now I’m commenting from the server which has dual boot. I’d rather let you do acupuncture on me than to show anybody the server’s structure
makitzar on Sat, 11th Oct 2008 9:24 pm
Ok Ok dont yell at me
(
LoL
am usin 32 bit depth ya
Well i guess its fine then ..
Still annoying thing is this from Intel Information tab from Drivers :
Minimum Graphics Memory:8 MB
Maximum Graphics Memory:384 MB
Graphics Memory in Use: 10 MB
So.. Where do i check when video memory is increased ? Example:Ill run NFS Carbon and where do i see if it use more memory from system for better render ?
)
DxDiag test went just fine ..
Mybe i shud download another drivers am usin 6.14 OMG it says : 5.6.2007 no good huh ? I downloaded it from links here .. pff
Updating Bios is “nono” atm, just got it if i kill it no good
Ill try that boot too then ..
cheers
“nono” kek .. ok ok i understand .. when r u free for acupuncture btw ?

I didn’t yell. I never yell.
If the card feels the need, it will ask the OS for more memory. When you’ve run the d3d test, the last test needs at least 32MB to render correctly. The OS says in the informational windows what is using at the moment. So, for example if you could see how much is using while running the d3d tests, you’d see more.
Having the latest drivers is always good. For vista 7.14 is the latest driver, dunno where M!llu found the others. http://emachines.de/de/support/eME510.html
There’s where I look for the drivers.
methode on Sun, 12th Oct 2008 6:58 am
Hello null,
AGP availability depends on which model you bought. If you bought a notebook which VGA card is integrated on the PCI bridge, AGP will not be available.
If you know that it should be available, go to BIOS and see if there’s enough memory allocated for AGP bridge.

Hi Marius and Jarek,
Try to download drivers from here:

It’s in English. Let me know if you have difficulties.
makitzar on Sun, 12th Oct 2008 5:26 pm
Hey Methode..
Well ill check the drivers coz some of em doesnt allow d3d some of em did .. strange .. Anyway ill test latest ones tho ..
Well , was thinkin did u call eMachines ? Any clue for dual booting Xp and Vista or to reformat Hdd again and install Xp only?
Thanks..
methode on Mon, 13th Oct 2008 6:36 pm
Yeah, drivers can give you different results with d3d, that’s true. The why i won’t explain, basically some drivers miss a connector to the directx API. I didn’t test which one though.
I couldn’t call eMachines yet, their lines are either busy all the time or they just don’t want to answer.
I really like Vista, truly. But I have 2 gigs of ram and am Aero addict. You could actually install XP. As far as I’m concerned you’re not in need of 2 OSes, I don’t really know your job but I guess you’re not a clross-OS windows developer, so having two OSes installed is nonsense.
I’d suggest to install the one you like more, that’s all. Above I explained why I like Vista more, but XP has extended support now so you will not run in any issue if you install XP.
So, just reformat and do a clean install of any of the OSes.
makitzar on Mon, 13th Oct 2008 11:14 pm
Heya ,
After clean install of Xp those drivers which didnt enabled D3d now did .. lol .. Well after all its good to see it and they r up to date, downloaded from Intel site .. 11.9.2008
Well i was thinkin its nonsense having Vista and Xp but for now i have Xp only but for few days Vista Dvd is arriving, after all i want to test it .. i can alwys switch back to Xp,now is “which one to use” and ill decide it i guess ..
I like Xp more but its something in the Vista too .. Dunno its inteface its so so mhmhmmmmm
Ya now am running on clean Xp .. ^ ^
Well after all u was right about this notebook its good and i like it , i can even play NFS Carbon on it , dont have Pro Street
I quited WoW so it doesnt mather .. ;0
One thing i REALLY like is ..This part of ur review “The WLAN device was working properly in any condition. It was able to connect to a desktop computer from almost 100 meters, but at this distance the drop of the transfer was considerable.”

About Internet ..
I was usin Wireless Net .. (Wireless PCI card in my Pc,cable, anntena etc ) ,well i bought AP for my notebook and went into troubles with it .. My Isp needs to reconfigure it
And i was thinkin ohh ok am without AP,but for the God sake i can try my integrated WiFi atleast .. And OMG guess what? Am connected to the ISP from almost 200m(ok mybe 150 not sure) with clear optictal distance from “My Room” .. That Atheros chip is really awesome
methode on Tue, 14th Oct 2008 3:05 pm
Am glad you like it, really B)
I didn’t test the Wifi for long since I have 1Gbit backbone connection through one single gateway at the moment and I missed it while using the wifi. But it could connect to a PC without any issue even if there were walls between the access-point and the notebook.
Um, why did you need an access point for the notebook? that’s kinda nonsense to have a wireless router plus your integrated wifi in the same time, isn’t it?
Or you bought it for the PC and share the net connection through Wifi?
makitzar on Wed, 15th Oct 2008 11:23 am
Yea:)
Well its good tho ^ ^
WoW you mean i can actually connect to my home Pc from my friend house with lap top without any problem ? Well i know basics only about networking like creating Lan connections etc
Gah its a mather of time when ill throw this AP to GARBAGE!
Gunna call my ISP about issue .. darn!
Cant make it to rok trough PPP(over Ethernet) protocol
Well, its not a nonsense(i guess)i need to find golden spot in my room to connect to my ISP Wireless base actually in that name i bought AP .. With integrated WiFi i bearly have (low-good) signal still its work.. The thing is i didnt expected to work anyway lap top caught me unprepared
Ya in the other side ill use AP for Home Pc when i bought it too ..But for now i bought it for notebook to have better connetion ..
makitzar on Wed, 15th Oct 2008 1:37 pm
Hey am back with good news my AP is working just fine but i have one question can u tell me some dB mesurments ? I mean my signal is 30-40dB and that would be Good , Very Good ?
methode on Wed, 15th Oct 2008 1:56 pm
The higher the db the better as far as I know.
As always, there’s a but: if you mean noise in the signal, 30-40db is too much and you have to find a less noisy spot. If that’s an antenna’s strength, than with that antenna you can cover about 1 square mile. If signal strength is what you mean, then it’s quite good.
I don’t really work with wireless network since the servers are always cabled (for many reasons), so my knowledge is quite limited.
makitzar on Wed, 15th Oct 2008 3:12 pm
Hmh.. Cool ..
Ya am talking about antenna’s(signal) strenght.. Ohhh 1 square mile, cant find how much is in meter i found only “square” units .. LoL sry for bodering but how much is it btw ? 1km ?
Well it doesnt mather u gave me nice info .. Am waiting for Cable Internet here too .. Kinda way to good bandwith’s ..

Hi, yesterday I also bought eMachines E510 and it looks great, but I haven’t been aware of its issues.
Thx guys for this great help and I want to contribute in this thread.
The problem for me was to enter BIOS settings and I see few of you also have this issue because F2 simply DOES NOT WORK.
The whole night I was trying to enter BIOS and this morning I finally succeeded (exactly in this moment when I’m writing this post).
The problem is that “starting screen” (the one with “big e”) doesn’t want to accept F2 command, it just gives the same result as you press F10 (Boot menu).
To enter BIOS you should try to do next:
- exactly when you get the “starting screen” quickly press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and you’ll get again that screen and then you can press F2 and enter the BIOS.
Maybe it’s not a big help, but I’ve finally managed to enter BIOS when I did that.
Now, if you will excuse me, I’m gonna get back on work and try to follow instructions to get my XP working on it.
damyr on Fri, 17th Oct 2008 7:55 am
ADDITION:
When trying to get BIOS settings, after above mentioned action, don’t just press F2 once, try to press it quickly for several until you get a BIOS setup page.
To be continued…
damyr on Fri, 17th Oct 2008 8:54 am
When you enter the BIOS settings, you have to do the following changes.
On MAIN – change value of AHCI to IDE.
On BOOT – get DVD RAM on the first place of Boot starting.
I’ve also disabled Network boot, but I don’t think that’s necessary.
Then save and exit.
You can now insert your Win XP CD.
Now, when you get the “starting screen” again, quickly press Ctrl+Alt+Delete…after that you’ll get “starting screen” once more and then quickly start to press F10 (Boot menu) for several times until you get Boot menu (looks similar as in BIOS).
Choose booting from DVD RAM and ENTER.
Then you’ll get a notice on the screen that you need to press any key if you want to start booting from CD.
Do it quickly, or else, booting will start automatically from its own system and then you’ll have to do everything all over again.
Finally, you’ll get Win XP instalation procedure (within good old blue screen).
To be continued…

my previous post seems to have disappeared!
can anyone confirm how much RAM you can put in the emachines e510.
i’m looking to upgrade but an sure how much it will take as i have read in some places 2gb is the max and 4gb in others.
the manual says 2gb is the limit but the acer website says 4gb!
any feedback greatly appreciated.
thanks

Hi again Lee,
First, sory for the mess up, I apologize. Had to roll back a database. again really sorry. Ironically, I can retype now 30 replies again
As I’ve promised, we’ve put the 2×2Gigs of RAM in the e510 but it didn’t recognize it as 4gigs. It used only 2 gigs of memory.
Anyway, the emachines.de website says:
“Up to 1 GB of DDR2 533 MHz memory, upgradeable to 2 GB using two soDIMM modules” for the e510 and 4GB for the e520 ( http://devoracles.com/acer-emachines-e520-rock-this-world/513 )
hope this helps
lee1978 on Wed, 12th Nov 2008 8:44 pm
Hi thanks for getting back to me even if you had to resolve issues on the site.
Am I understanding correctly from what you posted that when you installed the 4gb of RAM the e510 started but only recognised it as 2gb in total?
Also were you using XP or Vista? As I if I’m correct XP doesn’t recognise any more than about 3/3.5gb unless you use a 64bit version.
Thanks for all your help
Lee
Thomas I on Thu, 13th Nov 2008 2:47 pm
I use Vista Ultimate on the e510 and yes, you understood well: the notebook started but the OS didn’t recognize the 2×2 gigs, but 1×2gigs.
Guess, there was too much beer in me when i typed the reply yesterday
lee1978 on Thu, 13th Nov 2008 6:29 pm
Thanks for clearing that up, I just wanted to check what windows OS you were using. I’ll just get myself another 1gb stick of RAM seeing as you were using vista rather than shelling out for 2 x 2gb sticks.
I went back to the Acer webiste to check again what it said and I think that they had the links to the e510 & e520 mixed up somehow. The emachines uk site says the same as the .de ie only 2gb.

For everyone having trouble enabling WiFi – You have to install launch manager first. Then the button to enable WiFi starts working.
lee1978 on Sun, 11th Jan 2009 12:08 am
Hi
I asked a while back about RAM for this notebook and you were kind enough to do the tests to answer my questions.
I now have another!
I am now ready to buy more RAM but have conflicting info as what to use.
The information in the manual says DDR2 533Mhz RAM – which I think should be a 200pin PC2 4200 module.
Crucial have advised PC2 5300 which is 677Mhz again 200pin DDR2.
Can you tell me what module type you used for the test you did for me – or that you may even have installed now. I only want to buy one 1gb stick so want it to work with the module already installed. Thanks.
methode on Sun, 11th Jan 2009 6:40 am
Hi Lee,
I don’t have the notebook in the nearby so I can’t look on the RAM, but you can: near the battery there is a small ‘door’ to the RAM modules held by one screw. Switch the PC off open that lid and take a peak, it’s written on the RAM what type it is. Try to not touch the RAM module because if you are statically charged you may burn the chicken out of it.
Anyway, the manual as far as am concerned is correct, so it should be DDR2 533 MHz.
Please note though, that the RAM type may vary on notebook model basis. That’s why I started with opening the RAM lid.
lee1978 on Sun, 11th Jan 2009 12:41 pm
Cheers I’ll have to have another look in the base then – I did take the base off but there wasn’t anything on the side I could see except for a serial number.
I’ll have to take the module out and have a look.
methode on Sun, 11th Jan 2009 12:49 pm
Hm, that s*cks. Be sure to ground yourself before touching anything else you can bake the module. Sorry I couldn’t help with the requested info.

Hello,
I’ve bought an EMachines E510 a month ago. It’s quite a nice laptop but mine happened to be pre-installed with Windows Vista. The point is I don’t want to run my computer on that OS. I tried to get Linux, Ubuntu but installation did not succeed. thus, I believed that Linux could not be hosted on that machine but as you said in your article, yours was pre-installed with Linux. So, could you tell me what versions of Linux can be hosted on the E Machines e 510. I give you my Email adress: [email removed]
I hope you don’t mind I ask you to grant me some times in reading my post and answering it.
methode on Sun, 18th Jan 2009 6:27 am
Hi Florian,
My E510 came with an UNIX based OS so it is possible to get it running. The problem is that most of the hardware won’t work because there are no drivers for specific items.
Anyway, what was the problem with Ubuntu? Was there any error message or anything?
florian on Sun, 18th Jan 2009 12:27 pm
I finally succeed to run Ubuntu yersteday. I had to modify something to read the cd first when rebooting the pc.
Anyway, I have real problems with vista. I can’t use it anymore. Some of my files (writings made via Open Office) had disappeared. I tried to get them back but they were nowhere to be seen. I just decided to forget and write again the stuff I previously wrote. I save them in “Documents” and here again, they disappeared.
Do you know what is the problem?
I think I should re-install vista but there was no cd when I bought my machine.
That’s why I would like to use Linux. But in that case, could you give some advice, like the versions to chose…
I appreciate your concern in my case
Thank you, you’re doing a great job for us
methode on Mon, 19th Jan 2009 7:10 am
Well, I can’t state anything regarding the disappearing files. Windows won’t do that, probably its caused by the antivirus software you are using or other 3rd party software.
If you are used with Windows, then you will like Ubuntu. Install the latest you can get from their website.
florian on Mon, 19th Jan 2009 9:40 am
Thank you, I will follow your advice. I have just one question left, once on Ubuntu, could I burn an iso. image, I mean a cd of windows XP, in order to install it later? I guess it would not be clever to create a partition and use both linux and xp, would it?
methode on Mon, 19th Jan 2009 10:16 am
It is a good idea to have two partitions and have both XP and a UNIX-based OS installed on these, separate partitions. We do it often if we don’t want to mess with WINE to be able to run windows apps on linux boxes. The internet has plenty of information regarding how to create dual-boot sequence, just google something like “ubuntu windows dual boot”.
Burning ISO (or other type of) images on Ubuntu is OK. Please refer to the Ubuntu documentation or use the Ubuntu forums to get more information. To be sincere I never used Ubuntu yet. I’m stuck with CentOS which I use on all the servers I manage. Well, except 1 which is windows.

Did you turn it on? The shorthand button is near the power button. When it’s turned on it starts to blink.
If this doesn’t solve your question, please tell me your operating system and the WiFi device name/manufacturer.
You can also try to use the operating system’s own WiFi scanner. I used both Vista’s and now Windows 7 WiFi scanner and both worked fine.

hey all!
i got an emachines E720 yesterday. had no prob with entering BIOS, changed that thingie to IDE and begun installing XP. noticed there were already 2 partitions, one in FAT32 (first, C: partition). tried installing it there, changing the file sistem to NTFS, tried installing on the other (NTFS) partition, tried everything i could think off, and every time, the setup would fail after having loaded and copied necessary files, wright after the restart. it would restart and give a message DISK ERROR, PRESS ANY BUTTON TO RESTART. also, i would get some error about ethernet cable (after the restart, when installing windows), but that went away after i disabled network boot in BIOS. anyway, the DISK ERROR msg still remains.
so, after i get the dreaded msg, i can restart the windows installation process AGAIN, but it always fails after the normal restart, when the second part of the install proces should begin.
frustration level very high now! please help!
meerac on Thu, 9th Apr 2009 7:06 pm
hey, hey, hey!
found it! i mean, other people found it and posted on the net.
it seems after the restart that would initiate second part of the XP installation, setup was looking in the wrong partition. solution was to delete all partitions and create a new one for the install.
now computing happily!
i know this wasn’t a e720 discussion, but i couldn’t find one anywhere!
