Search on Twitter

by Gary Illyes

Ever wondered what others, those who you do not follow are talking about on Twitter in their 140 character messages? Yes, you did, as you’re human, too, and humans are curious.

Twitter, the infamous microblogging service introduced a brand new feature which lets anyone to search for anything they like, even in the users’ tweets who they do not follow. The search results are updated in real-time which is quite an interesting experience as we’re used to the static search engines like Google or Yahoo.

The new search platform can be accessed under the http://twitter.com/search and the http://search.twitter.com URLs. The development of the search feature started when Twitter Inc. acquired Summize, a tool based on the Twitter API. At the moment the feature is just as fast as Twitter is, hopefully it will remain in this state.

Search and Trends on Twitter

A new feature, introduced in the same time with Twitter Search is a service called — with much imagination — “Trends”. Basically this is a list of fast-rising terms and topics that users are talking about on Twitter.

Bloggers and journalists all over the net are expressing their thoughts regarding Twitter will become a rival of the major search engines and news agencies.
